A la veille de la sortie de son 1er album , People Eating People (the control group) , Nouela Johnson nous as accordé une interview , la voici
1)Hey nouela, how are you today ?
I’m doing very well, thanks. I absolutely cannot wait till the release date!
2)How did you get your start in music ? did you always want to be a musician ?
My mother was a piano teacher. I had my first piano recital at age 4. I decided i wanted to be a musician shortly thereafter. I started playing in bands in high school for a recording project.
3)Tell us about your album “People Eating People”
This album took about three years to put together. It was recorded in the basement of my house by my good friend Christiaan Morris, who did the whole album for next to nothing. This album was basically created from the generosity of several good friends who believed in it enough to donate their time and their talent. I was hoping to create a record filled with pop songs that nobody would feel ashamed to love. And i think i did it. Well, hopefully anyway.
4)How do you work on your songs ?
I usually just fool around on the piano for a few hours until i find something that’s fun to play, then write melodies over it. But then again, several songs on this album were created while on long bike rides through the city.
5)What do you think of the current music scene and the music business?
Well i think it’s harder getting on any label, but if you’re lucky enough to land a good deal with a small indie, its a very exciting time. The indie scene has never been stronger, and hopefully the lines between “indie” and “major” will be completely blurred in a few years.
6)What did you listen to when you were growing up?
I grew up in south Korea, so i mostly listened to whatever my parents did, My mother strictly listened to jazz standards by Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole. My dad listened to a lot of new wave. It was an odd mix. I also remember loving Michael Jackson as a very very small child.
7)Can you tell us a funny story about you, like a secret passion or an amusing anecdote?
Hmmm, I think it’s mildly amusing that during the recording of this album, i suffered a moderate concussion from falling off my bike. I’ve riding bikes for years, yet it had to be DURING the recording process that i have my first hospital-worthy cycling accident. My face is still numb in parts.
8)Is there anything you’d like to say to your French readers ?
I would like to live there, but can’t afford it. So, if you don’t mind, help me sell billions of records so i can buy a home in France. Thank you!
